Migrate from Google Drive

Move Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and ordinary files from Drive into a Dokki workspace.

What arrives

From Drive

In Dokki

Google Doc

An editable Dokki document. Headings, lists, tables, links, and formatting come across cleanly.

Google Sheet

A CSV file, not a Dokki table. The values are all there and stay searchable, but formulas, formatting, and multiple tabs are not.

Google Slides

A PDF file. The deck stays readable and searchable, but is no longer editable as slides.

PDFs, images, Office files, anything else

Stored as files you can open and search

Folder structure

Kept when you import a folder

Google Docs convert better than any other source Dokki imports from, because Drive exports them in a format Dokki reads directly. If you are deciding what to move first, start here.

What does not come across:

Not imported

What to do

Spreadsheet formulas, cell formatting, extra tabs

Only the first sheet's values are kept. Rebuild anything you need to keep calculating in a Dokki table.

Slides as editable slides

Recreate the few decks you still present from; keep the rest as PDFs for reference.

Comments and suggestions

Resolve or copy the ones that still matter before you migrate.

Sharing settings

Set up sharing in Dokki after import. Nothing is shared until you share it.

Revision history

The Dokki copy starts fresh.

Import from Drive

The files land wherever you start from, so begin at the folder you want them in.

  1. In the sidebar, point at the folder you want the files to land in and select the + beside it. To import into the top level of the workspace, use the + at the top of the sidebar instead.

  2. Choose Import….

  3. Under Source, choose Google Drive, then connect your Google account or pick a connection someone has already set up. Connections are added and reconnected under Manage sources.

  4. Under What to bring in, pick the files or folders you want.

  5. Under After importing, choose Copy once for a migration, or Keep in sync if Drive stays the system of record.

  6. The bottom of the dialog shows where the content will land. Check it, then select Import.

The results view lists each item as it is processed, and links completed items to the new Dokki resource.

Keep a Drive folder in sync

Turn on keep in sync when Drive stays the system of record. Dokki refreshes its copy when the Drive original changes. Sync runs one way β€” your edits to the Dokki copy are not written back to Drive, and can be overwritten by the next refresh.

For a migration, leave sync off. You want the Dokki copy to become the one people edit.

Who can do this

You need permission to edit the destination Dokki workspace, and a Google account that can read the files. Workspace admins manage shared connections; other members can import when their workspace role allows it.

If something fails

  • Files larger than 50 MB are skipped. Move those manually.

  • Reconnect the Google account if authorization has expired.

  • Open a failed item's error details before retrying.

  • A shared drive with thousands of files takes time. Import a folder at a time so you can review as you go.
